Do Latinas really lose more than $1,000,000 in a lifetime?! Latinas’ Equal Pay Day, the day that Latinas must work just to make as much as their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts made in the previous year was yesterday, October 21st. A Latina would need to work until she is nearly 90 years old (eight years beyond her life expectancy) just to make the same amount that a white man earned by age 60, according to the National Women’s Law Center.
August 3rd is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, the approximate day a Black woman must work into the new year to make what White non-Hispanic men made at the end of the previous year.
This is unacceptable! Women of color are finally saying that enough is enough. We’re here! We matter! We’re amazing! We want equal pay for equal work!
The ugly truth is that we must truly believe that we deserve and then we demand it, not wait for it to be given to us!
Since we are limiting our limiting beliefs, let’s agree to admit that outside of systemic racism and other structural barriers, many women of color are underpaid because we don’t ask, don’t ask for enough, or accept the first lowball offer during salary negotiations. NO more! You are:
- Hard-working
- Compassionate
- Resourceful
- Empathetic
- Ethical
- Collaborative
- High-Performing
You possess ALL the traits and transferable skills that make you a great employee and social worker or human services practitioner. You are the rock star!
Somewhere along the way, those traits betrayed you, and even amongst your other colleagues of color you’re now feeling overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated. Your micromanaging supervisor and toxic workplace have exploited your strong work ethic. You deserve more!
