You can call me The Packaged For Success Coach, a Career Coach, a Career Development Specialist, or a Career Advisor. The title isn’t as important as the work that I do. Helping students and professionals build the career of their dreams is one of my professional passions. Quite frankly it is also one of the things at which I am great! It’s what I do with intention and also what I do naturally – without warning or planning. I am gifted with the ability to see the potential in others and the capacity to help them discover and unleash that potential and their personal power. Confidence, competence, and credentials are the three pillars in my career development services. (Check out ‘How to Work with Nicki Sanders’ article.)
In addition to providing strategies on how to build a strong career I also provide tips on what to avoid. Here are 18 things that could hurt your career:
- Your fear – don’t be afraid to dream big or go after your dreams
- Lack of integrity – lying about your past professional experiences or about your current professional performance can lead to firing
- Lack of motivation – not caring about your work quality tells your employer that you don’t care about your job
- Rudeness/no manners – people want to work with people that are polite and professional
- Aggression/bullying – don’t become a risk for your company because they may be forced to let you go
- Isolating yourself from your team – team players very often excel in the workplace
- A negative attitude/pessimism – one apple really can spoil the bunch so that bad apple is a threat to a company’s productivity and profits
- Excessive (unexplained) tardiness or absences – you can’t be a good job is you aren’t on the job
- Poor performance – sloppy work, rushed work and incomplete work impact the bottom line and most employers don’t want to pay someone to ruin their business
- Combativeness or not taking direction well – you don’t want to be passive, but you do have to be respectful and learn to compromise
- Gossip – don’t cause confusion, drama, or division in the workplace
- Theft – this one is self-explanatory
- Inappropriate romantic work relationships – its best to keep your personal and professional lives separate
- Complaining instead of problem solving – employees who are resourceful and take initiative are often promoted
- Not respecting professional boundaries – professional boundaries protect employees and customers
- Complacency – keep growing and learning and adding value
- Disclosing confidential information – respect intellectual property and do not betray trust
- Not having a career plan – if you don’t know where you’re going you could end up anywhere
