Question: What Can I Do With A Social Work Degree?
Answer: Anything that you want!
I am on a mission to eliminate the old, narrow view of social work and promote the expansive diversity, opportunity, and career fields available to those with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. Social work is more than child welfare, private therapy practice, and school or hospital jobs.
Last week, I challenged myself to think of a field of social work for each letter of the alphabet. It was hard to think of social work career fields that begin with the letters K, Q, W. X, Y, and Z, but with collaboration from social workers on LinkedIn, we completed the career list (see page 3). The interest and feedback from this group project prompted me to go a bit further and use the alphabet to share job titles as well as common skills and qualities of successful social workers. I combined all three career lists in a simple, easy-to-share format you can download from my website.

My hope is that these short lists spark your interest and lead to research or connection with social workers in some of these fields and positions.
Please feel free to share the document with social work students, new professionals, supervisors, field liaisons, and seasoned social workers who are ready for a change.
Your social work career really is what you make it. Hope in the driver’s seat and steer your career toward the destination YOU determine. You don’t have to be limited by anyone else’s fears, misconceptions, or expectations.
REMEMBER: Social work skills are high-income skills. Social work skills are highly transferable skills.
