Define Career Success On Your Own Terms

Success has been defined in the dictionary as ‘a favorable or desired outcome,’ ‘the accomplishment of an aim or purpose’, ‘the attainment of popularity or profit’ and ‘a person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity’.

Does your definition of success include popularity, profit, and prosperity? Success can include more than money and power.

It’s easy to compare yourself to other people, but comparison isn’t beneficial. What motivates me may not be the same things that motivate you. Does your definition of success include health, wisdom, and alone time?

Clarity is essential to success. Success is easier to achieve when you know what you are aiming for. Until you determine what success means to you, confusion, disinterest, and inaction may be prevalent.

Abundance is your birthright. What does success look like to you?
A certain salary? A particular job title? A certain car or home? Spending time with certain people? A certain weight? Honoring your values? Living authentically? Setting healthy boundaries? Travel? Education? Self-care? Rest and relaxation? Serving specific populations? Shopping in certain places? Professional challenge? Not setting an alarm clock or punching a time clock? Fame?

No one knows you better than you. What do you want and what are you willing to do to get it? Don’t compromise your values or integrity for someone else’s definition of success. You know what you need to do, so do it for you, in a way that is authentic to you.

Be Bold! Be Honest! Be Yourself!
Ask yourself the tough questions then eliminate what doesn’t serve you. What are you unwilling to do to attain success?

“Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you’re proud to live.” – Anne Sweeney.
