Dr. King’s Calling, Purpose, and Dream Were Clear!

Today is the 3rd Monday in January and we celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I’ve visited the King National Historic Site in Atlanta, the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, and the King Memorial in Washington, DC. Although the reality of his death and the racial struggles he faced in his short life lay heavy on me, each experience was also empowering and life-giving. Dr. King’s calling, purpose, and dream were clear and today I honor his commitment, passion, perseverance, and faith.

As I think about all that Dr. King was able to accomplish in his life, I know that clarity was an essential element. He did not waver because he was clear on the intention, importance, and impact of his work. I’m sure that abuse, betrayal, and protection of his loved ones sometimes led Dr. King to question the heavy burden he carried for Black America – but he pressed on because he was clear about his unique, God-given assignment. It is that level of clarity that we all can aspire to in our careers. My role in life is not as large as Dr. King’s, but I admit that there are times when I still feel confused, tired, or even annoyed, and then I remember my why.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Career clarity is the first step to career fulfillment.

  • Are you clear about why you chose a career in social work or human services?
  • Are you clear on the things you want in your career?
  • Are you clear on the value you bring to your company?
  • Are you clear on what it will take to arrive at the next level in your career?
  • Are you clear on your career non-negotiables?
