Grateful For Those Who Paved The Way

Today is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start to summer. It is a day to remember the fallen soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom and democracy we enjoy here in the United States. I am grateful for their sacrifice as I understand that freedom isn’t free.

As a Black woman in social work leadership, I understand that politics is life and social work is an oppressive system that we must actively hold accountable to live up to its ideals. That I am able to be a part of the solution because of the sacrifice of those we honor today.

Although America hasn’t fully lived up to her promise of liberty and justice for all, I am aware that even as a Black woman in this country, I experience higher levels of liberation than people all over the world. I also understand that soldiers and military personnel aren’t the only persons who paid the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom. I am grateful for my ancestors and forefathers. I am grateful for those who paved the way for me to be able to vote, own property as a single woman, get an advanced degree, drive a car, start a business, and travel the globe.

I am filled with gratitude.
