How Are You Impacting Your Job?

Last year I asked the question, “How is your job impacting your life”?

We were in the thick of a pandemic, social and political – unrest, return to office ultimatums, supply chains shortages – oh, wait, we’re still there – but I encouraged us all to think about whether our jobs were adding additional stress and anxiety to our lives. For most of us, the answer was a resounding YES! Remember the Great Resignation?

That is still a very relevant question, but today I’m asking you to go a little deeper. How are you impacting your job?

Now, I have issues with the phrase “Imposter Syndrome”, but since so many women identify with it, let’s talk about it. Imposter syndrome is defined as the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills. Y’all are really out here still doubting yourself while you’re delivering greatness!!

You are not an imposter. You make the job, the job doesn’t make you. You bring your unique talents and skills to the position and magic happens.  Stop downplaying your achievements. Stop dimming your light. You are a high-performing woman. You deserve everything you have!

Now, you know I love New Edition so I’m going to use my faves as an example for you. I learned today that New Edition was the second artist to record Mr. Telephone Man and Delicious. If you’re not a NE4Lifer you may not know Delicious, but Mr. Telephone Man is a classic from their second album, New Edition. What?!

I was shocked. Of course, I think New Edition is the best thing since sliced bread, but their record sales, tour sales, and media interest agree with me.  I’ve never heard of either of the original artists – JUnior Tucker and Deco – but New Edition is a household name in our world nearly 40 years later! That is how you make an impact! That is the epitome of taking something and “making it your own”.

What is your “Mr. Telephone Man”? What is waiting for you to “own it”? It’s time to leave your mark!

The Career Lesson: Stop comparing yourself to other people and just do what you do the way that only you can do it! Serve imposter syndrome an eviction notice. Seriously, go be great without apology!
