Memorial Day is more than the unofficial beginning of summer. Today on Memorial we honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many patriotic Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades to honor those who gave their lives for our freedom.
