These 3 Words for Social Work

We’re on day 25 and we’ve been celebrating social work month all March long. I’ve thought so much about why I went into the profession, what I have been able to do, the lessons I’ve learned, the challenges I’ve faced, and where I plan to let my social work degree take me next.

As I prepared for presentations with social work students, I also began to think about the current state of social work.  I am so energized by the reckoning with low wages, oppression, and gatekeeping taking place. A new generation of social workers is ready to take the helm. They are starting with advocating for themselves first! They will not be ignored. They are not tied to the status quo.

I am also proud of the seasoned social workers committed to passing the torch without hiding the lessons

I am oh so ready for the enlightenment.

Here are the 3 words that come to mind when I think about social work:

  1. Versatility – there are so many ways to utilize your degree
  2. Fulfillment – I love what I have done, what I do, and plan to keep it that way
  3. Opportunity – The profession has to continue to evolve and elevate as the world changes and social workers advocate more for ourselves and our needs

What are the 3 words you would use to describe the social work profession?
