What Do I Want To Change About Social Work?

Yesterday I had the honor of serving as a main speaker for the Minds Over Matter LLC Social Work Month Festival. My topic was “Ready for Social Work”. It was a great event and I’ve listed the Instagram handles of the participants below so that you can follow and support them all.

One of the questions asked of the panelists was “I love social work, but I wish I could change what”.

I think that is a great question. I’ve discussed the answer numerous times without being asked the specific question. In fact, my answer was even a part of my presentation. The thing that I want to change about the profession is the narrow view of what social work is and does. We lose when we continually perpetuate this narrow view of social work.

  • Social workers do more than therapy and child welfare. I’ve never been a therapist or taken anyone’s child.
  • Macro social work is social work. All three areas of practice – macro, mezzo, and macro – are equally important and should be working together instead of competing again each other.
  • Jobs that require a license aren’t the only social work jobs.
  • Private practice is not the only way to succeed as a social work entrepreneur.

Social work skills are so valuable and transferable. Whatever isn’t growing is dying. Whatever isn’t improving is regressing. Change is constant. Let’s shift the narrative. It’s time for social work to progress, expand, and elevate.

What would you like to change about social work?
