Don’t Let COVID-19 Cancel Your Corporate Social Responsibility Programs

Corporate social responsibility is the act of incorporating environmental and social concerns into a company’s business model. Corporate social responsibility programs are based on the idea that businesses can make the world a better place or at least not bring more harm to it. Corporate social responsibility seeks to alleviate environmental and social concerns such as pollution and poverty. Some companies sponsor a highway while others sponsor a little league softball team. Some companies set aside a day for all of their employees to volunteer in their communities while others allow paid time off each week for employees to volunteer at a senior center or after school program. Corporate social responsibility can include green packaging and marketing practices as well as donating funds for oceanic research.

The financial ripple effects from the COVID-19 pandemic will be felt by many, many people globally for an unknown period of time. The hospitality industry had been especially hard hit . Some believe that hotel, vacation, transportation, casino and cruise industries may be altered permanently. Restaurants, bars, event venues and small businesses are also struggling.  There could perhaps be millions of people laid off from their jobs all across the world. We are in unchartered territory.

While many businesses are closing their doors, others are adjusting how they practice corporate social responsibility. For those companies that are physically and financially healthy, please don’t let the coronavirus cancel your corporate social responsibility programs. You are needed now more than ever.

Musicians streaming concerts for free, authors reading their books online, chefs turning restaurants into take out venues and delivering food to seniors, and big box retailers allowing seniors to shop for the first opening hour are all examples of corporate social responsibility. What can you do?
